The primary role of the Communications Operator is to provide clear communication of information within Union Glacier Camp and to aircraft, remote locations in Antarctica and ALE offices in Punta Arenas, Chile and Salt Lake City, United States. This role involves efficiently multitasking, keeping records, and communicating vital information that is necessary for day-to-day logistical operations.Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of air support, logistical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and private visitors. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.Seasonal InformationCommunications Operators generally work from early November to late January.Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitate seamless communication between Union Glacier, Punta Arenas, Salt Lake City, remote camps, aircraft, vehicles, field parties, and expeditions, collaborating closely with heads of departments (HOD) and the Field Operations Manager to keep them informed of plans, address emerging issues, and provide necessary support to the Operations team at Union Glacier and in Punta Arenas.
  • Serve as a central hub for relaying weather forecasts, METAR observations, and critical information to pilots in transit to Antarctica, while also conducting meteorological briefings, communicating ALE flight plans during start-up, and diligently monitoring and recording meteorological data for future reference and analysis.
  • Maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the iridium phone system, including sleeping with the emergency phone during 48-hour shifts, while also taking charge of operating and maintaining a range of communication systems such as satellite phones, email, slack, HF, VHF, Airband radio, Iridium inReach beacons, iridium, BGAN, HF, VHF, email, Slack, and inReach devices.
  • Ensure meticulous record-keeping of staff and client movements, equipment issues, expedition metrics, fuel usage in remote caches, and other pertinent information, while maintaining comprehensive communication logs encompassing flight following forms and daily Sitrep reports, all with the aim of maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation.
  • Continuously monitor aircraft using tracking systems like Skyweb/Skytrac to track movements and report accurate records.
  • Engage in regular staff training and stay updated on advancements in communication technologies and practices.
  • Provide training sessions on VHF handheld radios and effective communication practices at Union Glacier camp.
  • Assist staff and guests with IT-related queries, such as Wi-Fi connectivity and email setup.
  • Participates in a variety of hands-on general remote camp activities such as shoveling snow, melting snow, organizing stock/inventory, unloading and loading aircrafts, monitoring camp for safety issues during weather events, attending staff meetings, reporting hazards, completing reports and other end of season tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously, demonstrating excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and under supervision as an adaptable self-starter.
  • Understanding of VHF/HF radio communication operations and protocols .
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office programs and Apple OS.
  • Understanding of a variety of nationalities, religions, customs, and cultures represented by our clients and staff.
  • Ability to work seven days a week, and live in a tent in a cold weather environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Adaptable self-starter and the ability to work independently and with oversight to complete tasks.
Minimum QualificationsCommunications Operators must have a Radio Communications qualification or have previous professional Communications experience, and a valid passport.Preferred qualifications include a professional Radio Operators License/Certificate, experience with aircraft operations, and bilingual in spoken and written English and Spanish.All workers in Antarctica are required to be fluent in spoken and written English, physically fit and comfortable with physical labor, possess a valid passport, have the ability to live in a cold-weather environment, successfully pass a medical questionnaire reviewed by the Medical Director, and obtain a First Aid, CPR & AED certification prior to employment.Compensation and BenefitsThe Communications Operators will make a minimum of $180 per day and may be eligible for a higher rate depending on qualifications, certifications, and previous experience.Benefits include living and experiencing Antarctica, food and lodging, paid travel pre and post season, industry pro-deals, paid training, and accommodations at our seasonal logistics hub in Punta Arenas, Chile, and medical services provided by our Medical Team located at Union Glacier Camp.The Communications Operator is a Seasonal Contractor position.Physical RequirementsThis position involves medium work that primarily involves standing and sitting for long period of times. This position may exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Incumbents in this role typically require standing for prolonged periods; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and or fingers; shoveling; assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned. Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperatures, sharp objects, and travel.COVID Vaccine RequirementIn accordance with international travel regulations, all staff that are working or may be traveling to Chile or Antarctica must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2).
